Evangelion 1.0 takes #1

Evangelion 1.0 You Are [Not] AloneDespite opening on just 84 screens, and all of those providing standing room only for patrons, the first Rebuild of Evangelion film took #1 at the Japanese box office this past weekend. One of the venues in Tokyo, the Milano 1 stadium, usually holds more than 1,000 people.

The film’s distributor, Nikkatsu, said that more than ¥280m was spent by over 235,000 people over the first two days of the film’s release. Proof, if ever it was needed, that even a decade after it debuted, nothing has quite the same cash-cow potential of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Anime News Network has a more detailed breakdown of the entire Japanese box office from the weekend, which saw the latest Pokémon and Naruto films lose ground, while the Saiyuki live-action film stayed just inside the top 10.
