Despite opening on just 84 screens, and all of those providing standing room only for patrons, the first Rebuild of Evangelion film took #1 at the Japanese box office this past weekend. One of the venues in Tokyo, the Milano 1 stadium, usually holds more than 1,000 people.

The film’s distributor, Nikkatsu, said that more than ¥280m was spent by over 235,000 people over the first two days of the film’s release. Proof, if ever it was needed, that even a decade after it debuted, nothing has quite the same cash-cow potential of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
