As a follow-up to the news that GAiNAX are planning a new version of Evangelion, Anime News Service are reporting the “totally unconfirmed” news that four new films are planned, with the first scheduled for Japanese theatres next summer.

Under the title Evangelion Shin Gekijou Ban (translated as the possibly fake-sounding “Evangelion New Movie Version”), the project will include the original series creator Hideaki Anno in a role as General Supervisor, with Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Ikuto Yamashita returning to character and mecha design.

Some of the more specific details mentioned in ANS’s report include the news that although the content of the movies will be “quite different” from the series, they take place in the same timeframe, and that the technobabble may be reduced dramatically.

Update: Apparently this has all been confirmed in the October issue of NewType in Japan.
