The live-action Speed Racer movie has been given the go-ahead for a release in summer 2008, according to producer Joel Silver. Written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, most famous for their Matrix trilogy, the movie is due to start shooting next year.

Silver, who produced The Matrix, is quoted by ANN as saying that Speed Racer will “appeal to everybody”, and that the Wachowskis were reluctant to take the project without bringing something new to the property. Silver claims that the filmmakers “are approaching [the] racing scenes in a way you’ve never seen before,” by which he probably means bullet-time.
