Viz gets Death Note films

Viz Pictures, the live-action arm of the franchise’s anime and manga license-holder Viz Media, has picked up the rights for both live-action films based on the Death Note manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

A short theatrical run in American cinemas is planned, as well as festival screenings in Austin and Vancouver, with a US DVD release next summer.

The Death Note films, starring Battle Royale’s Tetsuya Fujiwara as Light, largely follow the manga plot, but add a few original elements to the story.
